Message for merchants using HFT201 POS terminals

Merchants with an HFT201 POS terminal should take special note.

HFT201 POS terminals can no longer be used for PIN transactions after 30 June 2008. In view of the ongoning fraud involving HFT201 terminals, Currence has found it necessary to order even those HFT201 terminals that have not yet completed the five-year depreciation period to be replaced by 30 June 2008 at the latest. All merchants using an HFT201 received a letter to this effect in the week commencing 4 February 2008.

Currence also urges merchants to check their terminals on a daily basis so that consumers can continue using their PIN cards securely.

In the course of February and March, Currence will be visiting all business with an HFT201. This visit is necessary because the HFT201 POS terminal has become the target of criminals, stealing PIN codes and card details. Merchants will be checked - and advised - on the measures they can take to prevent this 'skimming' activity.

Currence has produced a set of guidelines (Dutch) covering the safe and secure use of HFT201 POS terminals. It is important that you make your POS terminal easily recognisable by you in some way. Ways of doing this can be found in the factsheet ‘Guidelines for the safe and secure use of your HFT201’, which can be downloaded by using the link at the foot of this page.
